Umlaut was recorded over 3 days in Studio A with studio owner Marly Luske. The idea with this style of recording was to set up the trio in a pretty live arrangement, so that they could perform as they do on stage, with little or no effort towards the technical side of the recording environment.
Gear was left set up during the days, so that the musicians could easily return the following day and continue tracking straight away, without having to concern themselves with the technical side of the recording environment. 4 mics on the drum kit was sufficient, 2 on the double bass and a few on the jazz guitar, as well as the small amp. The spill of the drums was captured by moving the other two players around the larger live room until the right sound was achieved.
Mixing was mainly concerned with phasing, and overall levels, otherwise the right gear was selected and the songs did the rest. A simple approach to recording such a project can usually be the best. The character of the songs do the talking, the production is simply there to capture a true image of the live performances and to highlight certain moments. Toby Wren trio will return in 2008 for the follow up CD.
Marly welcomes other jazz bands to record at Alchemix, during 2008 Marly will be looking to focus his producing talents on live jazz and classical recordings.
